Three Essential Vegetable Gardening Tools
Garden Mulch
I love garden mulch on all my gardens because it reduces my weeding and the amount of irrigation I have to put onto my vegetable gardens to make them high yielding.
Three-inches of mulch will reduce weeding by 80%
Four-inches will cut back the weeding by over 90%
You can get a lot of vegetable gardening information (including videos) on my main vegetable gardening pages.
No Mulch?
You have several basic tools you’ll require.
Shovel
A long-handled, round point shovel for digging and turning over the soil in the spring.
If you mulch, you don’t need to turn over the garden but without that permanent layer, this becomes necessary.
Hoes
You’re going to need a good hoe. I prefer the Dutch hoe because of it’s back and forth motion (easier on the back) and the ability to get it right up close to plant stems.
The edge of the Dutch hoe can also be used to create shallow trenches for seed starting.
Planting and Hand Maintenance
If you want the best tool for planting transplants and hand weeding, the ho-mi or eze-weeder is the single best of the myriad of vegetable gardening tools on the market. This short video shows you my two favorite gardening tools (you don’t require the pruning shears for the vegetable garden)
Summary
Those three vegetable gardening tools will see you through an entire season in the garden. Yes, people will suggest you use others - indeed they will be delighted to sell you other garden tools but for the basic tool set - those are all you’ll require (they’re all I use)
Other Useful
I have a good collection of bamboo poles that I use to construct tripods and supports for climbing vines. Well worth the money instead of flimsy metal supports.
I also believe in non-plastic twine for supporting plants - you’ll find a hundred different uses for this twine in a garden.
