Rabbiting Spade for Perennial Transplanting

The rabbiting spade was designed many years ago as a specialist shovel for digging rabbits out of their burrows. While mainly used by farmers, it became a favorite of poachers as well.

Today it is used by perennial and vegetable gardening, for digging between closely planted vegetables and flowers. Not only that but I find it is extremely useful for making planting holes.

The size of the head is normally about 14cm (5 1/2inches) wide by about 27cm (10inches) high. I prefer the stonger wooden shafts than the tubular steel as they feel much better when working.

I used mine in the nursery for years before the wood shaft broke; I immediately got a new shaft for this useful tool and I confess it's one of my favorite tools for perennial gardening (particularly planting and dividing).

It is not particularly useful for general digging - the blade being far too small for most garden chores. But if you're a perennial gardener and divide perennials, you're going to fall in love with this tool.  I could go on and on about this tool, let me simply tell you to purchase the best one you can because you're going to find yourself using it on almost every plant.   Mine has dug every kind of plant - from perennial to shrub to tree that you can think of.
