Planting Spade

A planting spade is a specialist shovel used extensively in forestry work and when working with plants in the garden (also known as a planting spear in some circles).

It is worth mentioning this spade as it is extremely useful if you have lots of planting to do or have lots of digging in confined spaces in between vegetables or closely planted flowers or shrubs.

The length of the shafts are around 71cm (28inches) which is the ideal length.   If differs from the rabbiting spade primarily in the length of the handle (this one is longer)

What's This Spade Used For?

The planting spade is used mainly for making planting holes and digging in confined spaces between vegetables and closely planted flowers and shrubs. It can also be used for making narrow trenches and seed drills.

A couple of tips about digging:

Don't use your instep on the blade to force the shovel into the ground - always use the ball of your foot. It is quite easy to damage your foot if you use your instep.

If you haven't done any digging in some time or if it's a large job - don't overdue it and take regular breaks.

Wear thick-soled boots to prevent discomfort to your feet and good gardening gloves to protect your hands.

If you have a lot of planting holes or digging to do, don't lift a full spade load every time, digging is hard work, so light loads are best. Wet soil can be twice as heavy as dry soil so, if you can, wait for the soil to dry out before you dig. This tip doesn't work in clay soils - when they dry out, they resemble concrete (dig these when wet).
