Leaf Shredders
This shredded waste can be put directly into the compost pile or used as a mulch.
A mulch of about 75mm (3inches) will stop most weeds growing and it will retain moisture in your soil.
So, shredding your garden waste is environmentally friendly.
What Size Do You Need?
The type and size of leaf shredder you need will depend on the size of your plot, how much garden waste you want to shred and how frequently and the size and type of the material you want to shred.
Rent Before You Buy
I've had garden shredders and I have to tell you the small 7 hp unit I had was too small for my main garden. It was far underpowered to handle any sizeable branch or weed stem. This is one case where bigger is indeed better. Had I rented it before I bought it, I would have known better but that was well before I had the nursery and simply had a large vegetable garden.
This rule holds true for electric shredders as well. Anything less than a 2000 watt motor may struggle with larger material or high volumes. The higher the wattage the more powerful it is and the better and easier it will shred.
Gas or Electric
Frankly - I wouldn't play around with an electric shredder unless I had far more time than I do now. They're slow, underpowered and won't handle big stuff.
But to each their own and I'd encourage you to rent first (a cheap investment compared to owning a machine that doesn't work for you)
