Lawn Mowers

Lawn mowers are an essential gardening tool for anyone with a lawn (ya think) :-)

There is nothing more pleasing to you as a gardener, or those who lean over your fence in admiration, as a fine, well kept, lush lawn. Wether it is front, back or to the side of your house, a lawn, even if it's small or just a grassed pathway between flower beds, it adds something special to your garden. But only if it is well kept, with tidy edges, is free from weeds and bald patches and is always kept at the right length.

An unkept lawn with patches of weeds or bald spots, uneven sprawling edges or long grass is a frustrating eyesore. It will spoil the whole effect of your garden, your house and all that surround it - reducing your property value at the same time.

So you want a lawn that's always in perfect condition and you can enjoy and be proud of. Here's the way to have a great lawn using organic methods.

One of the most important things to keep your lawn in tip top shape is regular mowing at the proper height (tallest setting on your mower)

And the key to good mowing is to use the right lawn mower. But with so many to choose from which is the right one for you and for your lawn?

Factors To Consider in Picking a Lawn Mower

  • The size of your lawn
  • The type of grass
  • Is it level or on a steep slope
  • Is it even or undulating
  • Is an electricity supply readily available
  • Lawn mowers can be manual push/pull, electric, cordless (battery powered) or petrol, gasoline
  • They can be manual push, mechanically propelled or ride on also known as riding mowers, you can even get a lawn tractor
  • They can be hover, rotary or cylinder, reel
  • They can have a roller to create a striped effect
  • They have different size blades
  • They can collect the grass cuttings or mulch
  • Are they easy to maintain or repair
  • Your budget

  • Most Important Factor

The size of your lawn will be the biggest influence in choosing the type of lawn mower you will need. Use this as a general guide to get you started.

Urban lawns can easily be mowed in an environmentally friendly way with modern versions of the push mower.

For lawns up to around 20m (65feet) by 20m (65feet) an electric mower will do the work with ease providing you have an electricity supply available.

    For lawns over 20m (65feet) by 20m (65feet) and up to 40m (130feet) by 40m (130feet) a gasoline mower is ideal.

For lawns over 40m (130feet) by 40m (130feet) and up to 50m (150 feet) by 50m (150 feet) (1 ½ acres) gas lawn mowers with a cutting blade of 50cm (20inches) and power driven will be do the job but a riding mower is a much better solution for these sizes.

For lawns over 1 ½ acres use a larger lawn tractor.

Electric Mowers  quick and easy to use, here are a few things to consider when buying and/using an electric lawn mower

Cordless Mowers  they're getting there but here are a few things to ask before you buy one of these gizmos

Ride on Mowers   What's the difference between a riding lawn mower and a garden tractor?  Size of engine and heaviness of construction.  You want a riding tractor to blow serious snow or mow larger acreages.  You want a riding mower to mess about with a slightly larger than push-mower lawn. And oh yeah, a good lawn tractor will cost you more money but will do more work
