Hand Trowel
In fact, this small tool is one of the most popular gardening tools. It seems there’s one living in darn near everybody’s tool shed.
It’s hard to beat this tool for digging shallow planting holes in confined spaces.
Construction
Like all the recommendations I’ll make on this site, buying a heavier constructed tool is the best policy in the long run.
This particular tool will get a good workout in your spring garden and as they tend to bend (when you try to dig out rocks) I’d suggest avoiding the cheaper ones.
I’ve had a cast-aluminum one now for over 25 years and while I don’t like the handle (I had to tape it to avoid that aluminum feel and markings on my hand) I do like the sturdy blade.
What Are You Going To Use This Tool For?
Digging small holes for transplanting vegetable and flower started-plants.
Planting almost everything up to a 6-inch pot size quickly and easily without the use of a shovel. You could use it as a mini-shovel in thinning out excess vegetable seedlings.
You could also use it in the garden potting shed if you were potting up plants. Although I confess I usually use my hands for soil (but I’m a guy and have been doing it for too many years) :-)
