Hand Dibber

A hand dibber (or dibbler) is used for making planting holes. How’s that for a simple tool for a simple purpose.

Construction:

Most of the heads (pointy ends) are made of steel although there are wooden tools and the odd plastic and aluminum head on the market.

Avoid aluminum as it tends to bend and not last very long compared to the others.

The heads and handles are usually round - there are some squarish plastic ones on the market and my testing with them was less than positive (they’d make good door stoppers).

Personally, I like the look and feel of a wooden handle rather than aluminum or steel but that’s a personal preference.

Handles do vary in length and you should chose one that you are comfortable with. Some handles can be too short making them difficult and uncomfortable to use.

What is this tool used for?

The dibber is used for making planting holes for seeds, such as sweet peas, peas, broad beans and runner beans, vegetable and bedding plant seedlings and small plants.

It has no other practical use in the garden.

How To Use This Tool

Simply drive the pointed end into the soil to make a hole. Insert seed or plant into hole and cover over.

It’s an old-fashioned tool and slow to use in the garden. Some gardener swear by them when transplanting seedlings from seed flats to pots.

Caution: If you are trying to use a hand dibber in the outdoor garden, be aware that a heavy clay or rocky soil can deliver quite a shock to your wrist if you try to power this tool into the ground.
