Gas Lawn Mowers

The biggest advantage of gas lawn mowers are their sheer power.

These mowers will cut grass that is wet and long where electric or cordless mowers would stall at the first blade and give up.

I find them more of a pain in the anatomy with starting problems and mixing gas/oil etc (mine is an older model).  When they work, they're wonderful, when they don't they're a witches brew.

If you're buying a new one - make sure it has "kill switches" built into the handle.  While they're a pain to use, they're the best safety device going to prevent other people (you're too smart) from putting fingers and toes under the mower deck.

A decent motor will last for years if properly maintained.  And maintenance is relatively easy. Regular oil changes and once a year air filter and spark plug change is all that’s really needed (although I note that not many homeowners do this).

Gasoline mowers are more expensive than electric mowers but you get that extra power and don’t have to worry about an electrical supply or trailing leads, cords, which are always a real pain.

They are also heavier than electric mowers, so this should be a consideration if you have to lift them in and out of storage.  The other drawbacks of petrol lawn mowers is the noise and pollution.

They are much nosier than electric mowers and ear protection is a definite benefit if you want to look after your hearing.

But overall petrol mowers are value for money, easy to use if you choose the right one, and easy to maintain. They will give your lawn a good clean cut, keeping it just the way you want it.

Cutting Design Tip

One of the things that you can do with your lawn is to ensure your lawn mower has a roller bar behind it.  If you use your roller bar, you can create patterns in the grass (yes, that's how they do it on ball fields and other sports events where real grass is used)

Strips are created by mowing in different directs for example.  You can figure out some very interesting patterns just by changing your mowing directions.
