Garden Spades

Which garden spades are used for which job? Given we have a choice, which ones are we going to collect first?  And yes, I note I have them all but hey, I garden way too much and like to have the right tool for the right job in my garden.  Here's my take on these tools.

Garden spades are the first choice for double digging and general digging

The border spade can also be used for double digging and general digging and for use in confined areas and is ideal for the smaller person

For digging around and close to plants the rabbiting spade with it's narrow head takes some beating.  It can also be used as an alternative to the border spade

For use in very confined spaces next to plants, the hedging spade with it's very narrow head can be used

Other Uses:

For trenching work and making seed drills and back filling, the garden spade or border spade can be used

They are both are excellent for making planting holes and back filling

For digging in manure use the garden spade or border spade

Both the garden spade and the border spade are ideal for digging out thick plant, shrub or small tree roots

The rabbiting spade and shrubbery spade are just the right gardening spade for digging out post holes

So To Sum Up - What Ones Do You Need?

For a small flower garden, a border spade is all that is needed to do any digging work

For a large flower garden a garden spade will be needed for general digging and a border spade will be needed for digging in confined areas

But you could get away with just the border spade

For a vegetable garden, a garden spade will be needed for general digging, making seed drills and digging in manure. A border spade will also be needed for digging in between rows of vegetables

If you need to do a lot of digging near vegetables consider either a rabbiting or shrubbery spade.

That's about it, all you need to do now is to decide which ones you want.
