Fiskars Hand Pruners
I have three different sizes of these pruners and each has its own merits and drawbacks.
Let's call them small, medium, and large (regular hand sized, 12-inch and 18-inch)
The larger pruner - it may be hard to find in the stores - is wonderful for reaching into big old rose bushes and pruning. I've saved a great deal of skin on my arms by using this tool.
The medium pruner also cuts well but it really doesn't have the same use as the long-handled hand pruner. It tends to sit around a lot in the shed and is the least used of any pruning tool (as in never use it).
The short more typical hand pruner is a nicely balanced tool that works well. In initial reviews of these Fiskars hand pruners, I was very pleased with the way they cut and worked.
Over time however, I noticed the large size of my hands sometimes got my fingers jammed up in the lever action (something that has never happened with my regular pruners). This was quite uncomfortable as I was in the middle of a cut and couldn't stop the action.
I also noticed the blades tended to dull quickly and unless they were sharpened regularly, jobs became harder on the hands.
Bottom Line
If you have regular-sized hands and non-commercial use, the smaller hand pruners are highly recommended. Price points are reasonable and these can be found in almost all garden shops.
If you have a great many roses to prune and don't like getting all those scratches, let me suggest you hunt out the longer handled units. These too are worth the money if you have enough roses - but with only a handful of roses, I'd invest in long-sleeved shirts and good leather gloves.
And that's the deal with Fiskars hand pruners. Good tools for general gardening.
