Cordless Lawn Mowers

Many believe that cordless lawn mowers (battery operated lawn mowers) can't deliver the same level of power as an electric lawn mower.

Today this may not be the case. A typical cordless, battery operated lawnmower can deliver almost as much cutting power as an electric mower. Improvements to design including properly weighted blades, contoured decks and power transfer enhancements ensure a sufficient amount of power for cordless or battery lawn mowers.

The problem in reading reviews and playing around with them is that the cutting decks are not created equal - and some of the mid-range mowers will mow better than the higher powered mower decks.  Sharper blades contribute a lot as does the ease of pushing the cut grass blades out from underneath the unit efficiently (this is determined by air flow under the deck and the design of the deck itself).  The quicker the grass is out from underneath the deck, the more efficient the engine can be.

None of the battery operate lawn mower equipment had the muscle to power through deep grass so if you're prone to leaving the grass cutting to the end of your chores, this may not be the best choice for you.

Advancement in battery technology allows battery operated lawn mowers to operate for longer periods which allows you to cut more lawn before you need to re-charge the batteries.  And just to really annoy you, many battery lawn mowers don't allow for easy switching of batteries (even if you could afford to keep a spare or two around the house). This isn't like a cordless drill where you trade off and keep on drilling. These babies want you to stop mowing and plug them back in.

Whatever the label says about length of time the battery will last, you might want to discount that a bit (and then decide if you can mow your own lawn in that discounted time)

Cordless Design

If using a corded electric lawn mower was comfortable, then a cordless lawn mower is going to be even more so.

The limitations that an electric lawn mower presented were; length of cord, available power source and positioning the cord.

The cordless lawn mower has pushed beyond those limitations. With this mower, the battery is your power source and no time is spent positioning the cord for the next run or pass.

Simple to Operate

Battery lawn mowers are also equipped with gauges displaying available battery power levels making it easier to determine cutting time remaining.

A cordless lawn mower doesn’t need to have gasoline added to the tank.

They are also easier to push than gasoline powered lawn mowers - the lack of an engine isn't matched by the batteries (engines being significantly heavier)

Normal safety precautions need to be taken however - these units will still quickly and easily sever wayward fingers or unprotected toes if these digits are put under the deck for any reason.

Lower Noise Levels

Battery lawn mowers operate at only 60 decibels (gasoline mowers run around 90 or more if the muffler is off). Battery lawn mowers are so quiet two people can easily have a conversation while it is in operation. Try chatting with someone while a gas mower is running.

And as for the grass catching attachments - these are really non-starters in the lawn mowing business if you're not in the deep South.  Leave the grass on the lawn, it's 20$ nitrogen (plant food) and will quickly decompose to both feed your lawn and provide organic matter for the soil.
