Cordless chainsaws (battery operated chainsaws)

What are the pros and cons of cordless chainsaws, compared to electric cord and gasoline types?

Cordless chainsaws

Pro:

They’re truly portable. They allow you freedom of movement without having to deal with cords, which can be a major issue in fieldwork or the need to carry fuel and oil.

Con:

They’re heavier than electric chainsaws, because of the batteries, requiring the operator to deal with the extra weight.

Batteries do not last long and re-charging can take a couple or more hours, so they are ideal for work that can be done in a short time. Spare fully charged batteries can be a solution but they will need to be carried to the work area and they can be expensive.

They are really only suitable for cutting small branches and trimming shrubs. If a cordless saw binds up, battery life can be shortened dramatically.

Electric chainsaws

Pro:

They’re lighter than gasoline and cordless chainsaws, not having a fuel tank or batteries.

An electric chainsaw is likely ideal for most of your basic garden work.

Con:

Electric chainsaws have obvious limitations. Not all sites have mains electric access. Cords can be a problem in some situations, notably when dealing with large trees, or sites where extension cord length imposes limitations.

Cords are easily cut or damaged, so make sure you use an appropriate surge fuse at the power source that will instantly isolate the supply if the cord is cut or damaged.

Gasoline chainsaws

Pro

They are truly portable and allow you freedom of movement without having cords or batteries to worry about. They are more powerful than cord or battery operated chain saws.

Con

They are heavier than electric chainsaws and the exhaust, muffler becomes hot; if you are not careful can cause burns.

They emit fumes, which can be a problem in confined work areas.

Fuel and oil will need to be available to replenish the saw as necessary.

What do you need to know about buying cordless chainsaws?

The main issues for you as a buyer are suitability, servicing, and maintenance.  Buy from a dealer who can service what they sell because you will require servicing or parts at some point in this machine's lifetime.

Chainsaws have different balances and weights, and it’s strongly recommended that you test different saws in store before you buy. Pick up by the handle and see how the "balance" feels to you. This sounds funny to say or write but if you pick up a few different saws, you'll see differences.

Bottom Line

Which kind of chainsaw do you need?  The main uses for your chainsaw will define your choice for you.

In a domestic garden, a lightweight cordless chainsaw or electric chainsaw will cover your needs if all you're doing is some light duty tree or large shrub trimming.

A cordless unit isn't going to be very good for sustained wood cutting.

In a rural setting, if you're doing barn chores with this unit - an electric saw will do fine - otherwise fire up the big old one for the bush (that is unless that new tractor has a built-in generator)
