Border Rake
The head is rectangular in shape, similar to a hoe, but instead of a flat blade it has teeth, or tangs.
The head is usually made from nylon, nyglass or rubber and is moulded in one piece, head and neck.
It is narrower than a regular leaf rake and the tines do not flare out at the same large angle
The width of the blade will vary between about 15cm (6inches) to about 35.5cm (14inches) wide. The teeth, or tangs, should be no more than about 2.5cm (1inch) apart, 1.25cm (1/2inch) is better.
The handles are mainly wooden, fiberglass, or aluminium. TThe handles are normally around 137cm (54inches) long.
What's This Rake Used For?
The border rake is used for clearing leaves and other debris from between vegetables, flowers and shrubs without disturbing the soil or damaging any plants. With it's soft nylon, nyglass or rubber head and teeth it is perfect for this job. It is also flexible and strong enough to clear leaves from patios, driveways or paths.
How Do You Use This Rake?
For ease of use and comfort the length of the handle is critical. The handle needs to be long enough to prevent you from having to bend your back too much. Now, the easiest way to find the right length for you is to select one which measures from the ground to your ear.
Stand upright and place the rake head down on the ground by your side. If the end of the handle at least reaches your ear then it should be the right length for you. If it is a bit longer it will not matter.
The best position for using a rake is to stand upright, holding the rake as you would a garden broom. Stand with your feet apart about 45cm (18inches) and one foot slightly in front of the other. This of course depends on your height, it could be more or less. Choose a position where you are comfortable without feeling any strain especially in your back.
Unlock your knees to remove the strain on your back.
